This guide will walk you through the entire quest step-by-step, including how to access the Seed Vault and extract the Experimental Seed Sample safely.

Quest Objective Summary

The quest has three main stages:

1. Travel to the Research Building in Buried City

2. Find the Seed Vault located in the “room with a great view”

3. Extract the Experimental Seed Sample and deliver it to Celeste

The challenge isn’t the mechanics—it’s navigating one of the most dangerous indoor zones Buried City has to offer.

Step 1: Reach the Research Building in Buried City

The Research Building sits in the center of Buried City, positioned between:

• Marano Park

• Space Travel building

This zone is classified as a medium-value loot area, meaning you’ll almost always encounter active ARC units inside. Fireballs and Pops are guaranteed spawns, and depending on raid activity, you may also run into hostile Raiders.

Tips Before Entering

• Bring stun or explosive utilities for tight hallways

• Avoid hugging corners—ARC Pops love to hide near door frames

• Equip a Safe Pocket to secure the quest item later

Upon entering the building, your first quest step—Go to the Research Building—will complete automatically.

Step 2: Find the Room With a Great View

Once inside, your next clue is vague:
“Search for the Seed Vault in the room with a great view.”

Fortunately, the layout of the Research Building makes this easier than it sounds.

Where the Room Is Located

• It is on the first floor

• In the center of the floor’s main corridor

• Easily identified by its massive open window overlooking Marano Park

This window is the “great view” referenced in the quest—although “great” might depend on whether you enjoy watching ARC Surveyors patrol the outside landscape.

Notable Landmarks in the Room

When you enter:

• The open window dominates the front wall

• ARC machines roaming the park are visible from inside

• The Seed Vault sits on the left-hand side

Congratulations—this is the target room.

Step 3: Interact with the Seed Vault

Inside the room, look to the left for a structure marked with a Cryogenic Hazard symbol. This is the Seed Vault.

Approach and interact with the vault to unlock the next objective. Upon doing so, an item will drop onto the floor:

This is your quest item—an irreplaceable biological sample tied to Celeste’s research. Picking up the Seed Sample completes the objective:

And immediately begins:

• Deliver the Experimental Seed Sample to Celeste

Before doing anything else, open your inventory and place the Seed Sample into your Safe Pocket if available.
If you fall in combat without securing the item, you’ll have to repeat the entire mission.

Buried City can be unforgiving, especially around mid-value structures like the Research Building. ARC Fireballs often linger outside, Shredders rotate patrol paths, and Raiders tend to camp high-traffic areas.

• Avoid sprinting through open plazas around Marano Park

• Follow building edges and interior paths to minimize exposure

• Listen for Fireball audio cues—they can end your run instantly

• Use rooftops only if you can avoid Surveyor line-of-sight

Once you find an extraction elevator, call it, secure your perimeter, and leave the zone.

After extraction, return to Celeste in Speranza to finish the quest.

Quest Completion Rewards

Upon handing in the seed sample, the Root of the Matter quest line concludes, and Celeste rewards you accordingly. This quest also opens up additional lore-oriented tasks involving environmental research across other maps.

Completing this mission pushes your progression further into Buried City’s narrative arc and expands what materials become available later.
