ARC Raiders Unexpected Initiative Guide: How to Find the Fertilizer & Water Pump

The Unexpected Initiative quest in ARC Raiders is one of the more immersive early-to-mid-game missions, blending exploration, environmental navigation, and PvEvP survival across the hostile ruins of the Buried City. Assigned by Tian Wen, this quest asks you to secure two crucial greenhouse components—a batch of Fertilizer and a functional Water Pump—to help restart a food-production project. While the objectives may sound simple, the items are hidden in two highly contested rooftop zones and require careful traversal to secure safely.

This guide walks you through every step, offering detailed routes, survival tips, and extraction strategies. Follow along and you’ll complete the Unexpected Initiative quest cleanly in a single run while avoiding the major hotspots that tend to attract Raider skirmishes.

How the Unexpected Initiative Quest Works

    ARC Raiders Unexpected Initiative Guide

    Tian Wen’s request is straightforward:

    1. Collect Fertilizer from the Grandioso Apartments rooftop

    2. Collect a Water Pump from the broken rooftop garden at Piazza Roma

You can collect either item first, but both must be retrieved in the same raid to prevent the quest from soft-locking. Fortunately, these two rooftops are located relatively close to one another on the Buried City map, making the route manageable even under pressure.

Each location is situated in a vertical-access zone that often draws players due to the elevated loot potential and strong vantage points. Move carefully, stay aware of ARC threats, and avoid open skylines where snipers may perch.

Fertilizer Location – Grandioso Apartments Rooftop

The Fertilizer is located atop the Grandioso Hotel/Apartments, a prominent structure in the eastern region of the Buried City. This building is flagged as a medium-value loot area, which means expect some activity—both hostile Raiders and opportunistic players often scout this location.

    1. Enter the Grandioso Lobby

Approach the hotel through its main entrance. You’ll typically find the lobby cleared out, but occasionally ARC drones patrol this area. The lobby’s open layout makes it easy to spot incoming threats—use that to your advantage.

    2. Find the Elevator Shaft with the Zipline

Inside the building, navigate until you reach an empty elevator shaft. A zipline runs vertically upward—this is your primary route to the upper floors.

Take the zipline up to the second-last level. Expect noise here; ARC Pops and Fireballs frequently hover near this rooftop zone and react to player movement.

    3. Reach the Rooftop

After exiting the zipline, turn right and locate a staircase leading to the actual roof. This is a tight corridor, which works in your favor—audio cues will alert you to nearby Raider intrusions.

    4. Collect the Fertilizer

Once on the rooftop, look for flower pots near the entrance doorway. Interact with them to gather the Fertilizer.

With the first half of the mission done, retreat immediately. You’re exposed here, and staying too long on a popular rooftop is an easy way to get eliminated by another squad.

Water Pump Location – Piazza Roma Broken Rooftop Garden

Your next stop is the Piazza Roma district, just south of Grandioso Apartments. The building holding the Water Pump is unmarked, making it less contested than Grandioso—great news for players trying to stay low-profile.

    1. Locate the Correct Building

Move south from Grandioso until you reach the Piazza Roma cluster. You’re looking for a building with accessible interior stairways that lead upward. There’s no loot marker on the map, but the rooftop garden’s distinctive broken architecture makes it easy to identify once you’re close.

    2. Climb to the Rooftop

Enter the building and ascend multiple flights of stairs. The interior is usually quiet, as most Raiders bypass this building due to its lack of loot indicators. This gives you breathing room.

    3. Reach the Broken Rooftop Garden

Once you emerge onto the rooftop, immediately turn right. You’ll see an arrangement of damaged bathtubs and rectangular soil beds—these are remnants of the abandoned greenhouse project.

    4. Retrieve the Water Pump

At the end of the line of tubs, look for a small machine with several connecting tubes. Interact with it to trigger a brief animation. When it completes, the Water Pump drops from the machine—pick it up to finalize the second objective.

Your main goal now is survival. Do not linger—head toward the nearest metro station to extract safely.

Completing Unexpected Initiative and Claiming Your Rewards

Once you extract from Buried City with both the Fertilizer and Water Pump, return to Speranza. Open Tian Wen’s trader tab, and you’ll be able to claim your rewards:

    • IL Toro Shotgun

    • 40x Shotgun Ammo

    • Shotgun Choke II attachment

These rewards are excellent for reinforcing early- and mid-game loadouts, especially for close-quarters combat in tight building corridors.

Why GladiatorBoost Helps With ARC Raiders PvPvE Missions

The Buried City is one of the most punishing zones in ARC Raiders, especially when quests require rooftop navigation under pressure. If you want to speed up your progression, secure difficult quest items, or farm key weapons without repeated deaths, GladiatorBoost’s ARC Raiders boosting services offer a reliable and safe solution. Professional boosters handle the risky runs while you enjoy steady progression, gear unlocks, and consistent resource gains—perfect for players who prefer spending their time on high-impact engagements rather than endless retries.

Final Tips for a Clean Unexpected Initiative Run

    • Move fast between rooftops—lingering is dangerous.

    • Avoid ziplines if enemy players are nearby; they make you predictable.

    • Bring mid-range weapons to handle ARC Pops effectively.

    • Always pick up both items in one run to avoid quest bugs.

    • Extract immediately after grabbing the Water Pump.

Complete these steps, and you’ll finish Tian Wen’s quest smoothly while securing a valuable shotgun and attachments to bolster your loadout.
