In World of Warcraft, mounts are a symbol of prestige, dedication, and sometimes pure luck. From rare drops and achievements to event-exclusive and removed content, some mounts stand as the rarest collectibles in Azeroth. Players who own these mounts proudly display them, showcasing their hard work, patience, or deep pockets.

This list ranks 20 of the rarest mounts in WoW, factoring in drop rates, availability, and acquisition difficulty. If you’re looking to add these ultra-rare mounts to your collection, be prepared for long grinds, competition, and a bit of RNG luck.

    Rarest Mounts in WoW

    20. Time-Lost Proto-Drake

    Drop Chance: Guaranteed
Obtained by: Killing Time-Lost Proto-Drake in Storm Peaks (Wrath of the Lich King)

The Time-Lost Proto-Drake is one of the most infamous rare spawns in WoW history. Found in the Storm Peaks, this drake only spawns every 2 to 8 hours, and even then, it may be Vyragosa, its shared spawn, instead. Because of this, many players spend days or even weeks camping it.

    19. Beledar’s Spawn

    Drop Chance: Low
Obtained by: Killing Beledar’s Spawn in Hallowfall

Beledar’s Spawn is only available during Beledar’s Shadow (nighttime in Hallowfall), appearing randomly at one of 20 locations. With a low drop rate and limited daily attempts, this mount remains elusive for many collectors.

    18. X-45 Heartbreaker

    Drop Chance: ~5%
Obtained by: Love is in the Air event (Heart-Shaped Box)

Previously known as the Big Love Rocket, this seasonal mount was once one of the rarest in the game, with a 0.03% drop rate. Blizzard has since improved the odds, but it remains a heavily sought-after event mount.

    17. Emerald Drake

    Drop Chance: Achievement Reward
Obtained by: Awake the Drakes Achievement

Awarded to players who collect multiple dragon mounts, including those from raids, reputation vendors, and world drops. While not the hardest to obtain, the time investment required makes it a rarity.

    16. Ultramarine Qiraji Battle Tank

    Drop Chance: RNG-Based
Obtained by: Solving Tol’vir Archaeology Artifacts

One of the few Qiraji mounts usable outside Ahn’Qiraj, this bug requires high-level Archaeology and multiple Tol’vir dig sites. Its RNG-heavy nature makes it a frustrating but rewarding mount to obtain.

    15. Ivory Goliathus

    Drop Chance: Achievement Reward
Obtained by: Glory of the Delver Achievement

This Khaz Algar Delves meta-achievement reward demands completing all tiers, finding Sturdy Chests, and overcoming special challenges. Only the most dedicated PvE players have earned this mount.

    14. Gorestrider Gronnling

    Drop Chance: Achievement Reward
Obtained by: Glory of the Draenor Raider Achievement

This Draenor-themed mount requires players to complete raid-specific challenges in Highmaul and Blackrock Foundry. Some achievements require 10+ players, making it difficult to obtain post-expansion.

    13. Tarecgosa’s Visage

    Drop Chance: Quest Reward
Obtained by: Legendary Staff Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest

Originally an exclusive transformation for staff owners, Blizzard later added a permanent mount version. Only players who completed the original questline can unlock this one-of-a-kind flying form.

    12. Mighty Caravan Brutosaur

    Drop Chance: Removed Vendor Purchase
Obtained by: Black Market Auction House (originally 5 million gold)

Once the ultimate gold sink mount, this auction house mount was removed from vendors but can still be found at the Black Market Auction House, where it typically sells for gold cap (9.99M).

    11. Valiance

    Drop Chance: Secret Questline
Obtained by: Unlocking Naxxramas secrets & defeating Instructor Razuvious

A hidden mount requiring players to solve a secret questline in Naxxramas. Since Blizzard does not advertise secret mounts, very few players even know how to get it.

    10. Soaring Spelltome

    Drop Chance: Achievement Reward
Obtained by: A Tour of Towers Achievement

Awarded for completing every Mage Tower challenge, this skill-based mount remains out of reach for many, as Mage Tower fights are some of the hardest solo challenges in WoW.

    9. Swift Zulian Tiger

Drop Chance: Black Market Auction House
Obtained by: Originally from Zul’Gurub, now only BMAH

This highly sought-after tiger mount was removed in Cataclysm and is now only obtainable via the Black Market Auction House, often fetching millions of gold.

    8. Silent Glider

    Drop Chance: <2%
Obtained by: Killing Soundless in Nazjatar

A rare spawn with a long respawn timer, plus a low drop rate, makes this mount a nightmare for collectors.

    7. Amani War Bear

Drop Chance: Removed Timed Raid Event
Obtained by: Zul’Aman’s timed event (Burning Crusade)

One of WoW’s first timed raid challenge mounts, removed in Wrath of the Lich King to preserve its prestige.

    6. Black Proto-Drake

    Drop Chance: Removed Achievement Reward
Obtained by: Glory of the Raider (25-player)

Available for only 153 days in Wrath of the Lich King, this mount was removed after Patch 3.1, making it one of the rarest raid achievements ever.

    5. Big Blizzard Bear

    Drop Chance: No longer obtainable
    Obtained by: BlizzCon 2008 Code

Given to attendees of BlizzCon 2008 or DirectTV subscribers, making it one of the rarest promotional mounts in WoW history.

    4. Magic Rooster

Drop Chance: WoW TCG Loot Card
Obtained by: El Pollo Grande TCG Card

A Trading Card Game (TCG) mount, with no alternative way to obtain it, making it exclusively available through rare loot card resellers.

    3. Prestigious Bloodforged Courser

    Drop Chance: Honor Level 500
Obtained by: PvP grinding (4.4 million Honor required)

This mount requires an extreme PvP grind, making it one of the least owned mounts in the game.

    2. Black Qiraji Battle Tank

Drop Chance: Only available during Gates of Ahn’Qiraj event
Obtained by: Completing the Scarab Lord questline

This legendary mount was only obtainable for 10 hours per server, making it one of the rarest and most exclusive mounts ever.

    1. The Original Epic Mounts

Drop Chance: Vendor Purchase (Removed in Patch 1.4)
Obtained by: Pre-Patch 1.4 Mount Vendors

These pre-expansion, unarmored epic mounts were only available for 6 months, making them the rarest mounts in WoW history.
