The Mage Boss Encounter: Strategies for Success

Now that you’re familiar with the requirements and process of our ESO Aetherian Archive Trial Boost, let’s delve into the mechanics of one of the most challenging bosses in the trial – The Mage. This boss can be a formidable opponent, causing difficulties for tanks, DPS players, and healers alike. However, with our expert strategies, you can conquer The Mage encounter with ease.

    Positioning and Chain Lightning

One of the most dreaded mechanics in the Aetherian Archive Trial is the Chain Lightning. This ability zaps a player who is standing too close to another player, causing increasing damage as the chain spreads. However, understanding the boss’s field of vision can help you avoid this deadly mechanic. The Mage has a 180-degree field of vision, only hitting players in front of her. By positioning the group behind the boss, you can ensure that no one will be in range to receive the Chain Lightning. Imagine an imaginary line dividing the boss’s center into a 180-degree front and a 180-degree back. As long as you do not cross this line, you will remain safe from the Chain Lightning.

The tank should taunt the boss but stay at arm’s length, a few feet away. This distance allows the tank to maintain the taunt and attention of the boss while reducing the risk of getting zapped. DPS players should also position themselves behind the boss, hitting from a distance of 5-7 meters. By creating a minimum 10-meter gap between the tank and the DPS, you can ensure that the tank will be the only one affected by the Chain Lightning, effectively nullifying its impact. Remember, no one should ever cross the imaginary line to avoid unnecessary risks.

    Axes, Mines, and Black Holes

During the fight with The Mage, several additional mechanics come into play. When the boss shouts lines like “I cannot stop these weapons” or “I cannot control my armory,” large purple axes will spawn. The tank should immediately grab these axes and keep them with them at all times. It’s crucial to avoid spinning the boss or causing Chain Lightning by running through the group to taunt the axes. As the fight progresses, more axes will spawn, making it increasingly challenging for the tank. The axes deal moderate damage, but their heavy attacks can knock you down and potentially lead to your demise. Blocking these heavy attacks is essential to survive.

Mines will randomly appear on the floor during the fight. While they can be avoided, stepping on them deals high damage and can overwhelm the room if left unchecked. If you have DPS players with damage shields and full health, they can run into the mines to destroy them. Alternatively, stamina DPS players with full health can block while walking into the mines to detonate them. If your off tank is available, they can activate mist form and run through the mines without getting stunned, clearing multiple mines at once.

Watch out for black holes that spawn randomly around the room. These black holes deal significant damage over time and must be avoided. By maintaining the formation described earlier, with the tank at the front and the DPS at the back, you can ensure that the group remains safe from the black holes. If the tank needs to move left or right, the entire group should move in the opposite direction to maintain the formation and prevent anyone from crossing the 180-degree line.

Reflections, Meteors, and Atronachs (Hard Mode Only)

Throughout the fight, you will encounter reflections of the mage appearing randomly in different locations. These reflections emit a damaging area-of-effect (AOE) attack that must be killed swiftly. As soon as a reflection appears, switch your focus to it and eliminate it. Failure to kill the reflections quickly can lead to an overwhelming number of them in the room, making the fight much more challenging. If the reflection appears in the tank’s section, it’s best to kill it from range. If it appears in the DPS’s section, you can physically run over to it and eliminate it, or range it as you would with the other side.

In hard mode, large AOE meteors will land on players’ heads during the fight. Blocking is essential to avoid being stunned by the meteors. Pay close attention and block to ensure your survival.

Hard mode also introduces Storm Atronachs into the fight, in addition to the axes. These Atronachs must be killed promptly. The tank can position them close to the boss, but remember to maintain the minimum gap to avoid Chain Lightning. Alternatively, you can kill the Atronachs from range. Be particularly cautious when the Atronachs reach low health, as they will unleash a continuous stream of AOE lightning damage until they are defeated. Execute these Atronachs as quickly as possible to minimize the risk to the group.

    Execute Phase and Final Tips

When The Mage reaches around 15% health, she will knock the group down repeatedly. This is the execute phase of the fight. Ensure that all reflections are dead before pushing her to this phase, as any remaining reflections can complicate the encounter. During the execute phase, all axes will be removed from the fight. The boss will cast a massive upside-down nova that heads toward the group, dealing significant damage over time. This damage increases as the phase progresses, requiring careful coordination and focus from the group.

Healers should prioritize healing during this phase, while tanks maintain taunt and control any stray Atronachs. DPS players must execute their rotations flawlessly to maximize damage output. Tanks can also provide damage shields to the group to enhance survivability. Utilize abilities such as Nova, Permafrost, Veil, and other protection buffs strategically throughout the final phase to keep everyone alive and ensure victory.

With these strategies in mind, you are well-equipped to conquer The Mage encounter in the Aetherian Archive Trial. Remember to communicate and coordinate with your team, prioritize mechanics, and adapt to the challenges that arise. Good luck on your journey through the Aetherian Archive Trial, and enjoy the rewards that await you!
